Quick answer
The US CMA is IMA’s two-part management accounting certification. Each part has 100 multiple-choice questions plus a second section that, during 2026, moves from essays to case-based questions. You need a bachelor’s degree, two years of relevant experience and IMA membership, and must pass both parts within three years of paying the entrance fee.
Key takeaways
- The US CMA (Certified Management Accountant) is awarded by IMA, the Institute of Management Accountants, USA.
- It has only two parts, each a 4-hour exam: 100 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, then a 1-hour second section.
- During 2026, IMA is replacing the two essay questions in each part with case-based questions (CBQs); from the September/October 2026 window, CBQs are the only format.
- You must score at least 50% on the multiple-choice section to move to the second section, and 360 out of 500 to pass a part.
- Certification needs a bachelor’s degree (or an approved professional qualification), two years of relevant experience and active IMA membership.
The US CMA has become one of the fastest-growing finance qualifications among Indian students. It has just two exams, it is recognised by multinational employers, and it can be completed alongside a degree or a job.
In 2026, the exam itself is changing. IMA is replacing the essay questions with case-based questions (CBQs), which changes how students should prepare.
This guide explains the US CMA course, the new format, who is eligible in India, and whether it is the right qualification for you.
What is the US CMA?
The Certified Management Accountant (CMA) is a professional certification from IMA (Institute of Management Accountants), USA. It focuses on the work finance teams do inside companies:
- Planning, budgeting and forecasting
- Performance and cost management
- Financial statement analysis and corporate finance
- Decision analysis and risk management
- Technology, analytics and internal controls
- Professional ethics
Unlike CA or ACCA, US CMA does not train you for statutory audit or tax practice. It prepares you for management accounting and corporate finance roles.
US CMA exam structure
The US CMA has two parts. Each part is a 4-hour computer-based exam:
- Section 1: 100 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours (75% of the score)
- Section 2: 1 hour (25% of the score) – essays until 2026, now case-based questions
You must score at least 50% on the multiple-choice section to unlock Section 2. The passing score for each part is 360 out of 500.
| Part 1: Financial Planning, Performance and Analytics | Weight | Part 2: Strategic Financial Management | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| External Financial Reporting Decisions | 15% | Financial Statement Analysis | 20% |
| Planning, Budgeting and Forecasting | 20% | Corporate Finance | 20% |
| Performance Management | 20% | Decision Analysis | 25% |
| Cost Management | 15% | Risk Management | 10% |
| Internal Controls | 15% | Investment Decisions | 10% |
| Technology and Analytics | 15% | Professional Ethics | 15% |
What is changing in the US CMA exam in 2026?
IMA is replacing the two essay questions in each part with case-based questions (CBQs). The 100 multiple-choice questions, the topics and the exam time stay the same.
Each CBQ gives you a short case study of about 250 words, followed by six or seven questions. These can be drag-and-drop, multiple-select, numerical entry or list selection, and some need calculations.
The change is phased across the 2026 testing windows:
| Testing window | Section 2 format |
|---|---|
| January / February 2026 | Essays only |
| May / June 2026 | Choose essays or case-based questions |
| September / October 2026 onwards | Case-based questions only |
What this means for your preparation
If you are testing from late 2026, practise case-based questions, not essays. Make sure your study material and mock tests include CBQs. Because CBQs are scored faster than essays, results may also come out sooner.
US CMA eligibility for Indian students
To become a certified US CMA, you need:
- Education: a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, or an approved professional qualification such as CA or CMA India
- Experience: two continuous years in management accounting or financial management (before the exam or within seven years after passing)
- IMA membership and payment of the CMA entrance fee
- Both parts passed within three years of paying the entrance fee
You can sit the exams before finishing your degree, for example in your final year of B.Com, and submit your degree later. There is no age limit.
Is the US CMA difficult?
The US CMA has only two exams, but each one is broad. Students find these areas toughest:
- Managing time across 100 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours
- Applying concepts in case-based questions, not just recalling them
- Corporate finance and decision analysis calculations in Part 2
- Studying alongside college or work
A structured plan with regular mock exams makes a big difference. Most students prepare one part at a time.
- Join IMA. Take student membership if you are still studying, or professional membership if you are working.
- Pay the CMA entrance fee. Your three-year window to pass both parts starts from here.
- Pick your first part and testing window. Many students start with Part 1. Book your exam date early.
- Prepare with CBQ-ready material. Practise multiple-choice and case-based questions with timed mocks.
- Complete the experience requirement. Record two years of relevant experience to receive your certificate.
Career options after US CMA
US CMAs usually work in corporate finance roles such as:
- Financial planning and analysis (FP&A) analyst or manager
- Management accountant and cost analyst
- Business and finance analyst in global capability centres
- Financial controller and finance manager
- Roles with multinational companies in India, the Middle East and the US
Many Indian students combine US CMA with B.Com, an MBA, or CMA India.
